An autoresponder will return a pre-written message to whomever sends email to that address. A good use for autoresponders is to send information about your company. A copy of the email sent to the autoresponder can also be forwarded to your mail account so that you can see who sent email to your autoresponder. For instance, on Speedsoft when you send email to support, we send a copy to support and a copy to an autoresponder which emails you back notifying you that we have received the message. This is immediate and assures you that we did get the message. Your pre-written message can be located in your home directory or subdirectory. It must be a text (ASCII) file. The top lines can contain header information, such as a reply-to and subject lines. Then skip a line and start your message. NOTE: If you do not put header information, the first line of your file must be blank. This is because there must be one blank line between the header and the message. --contents of a sample prewritten message file, we'll call it info.txt-- Reply-To: foo@speedsoft.com Subject: The information you requested This is the stuff you wanted. blah blah. -----end of info.txt (don't include this line in the message file)------ For virtual hosting clients, use the Email Alias Editor to setup and configure autoresponders. For non-virtual hosting clients, to set up the autoresponder contact support@speedsoft.com with the name of the email alias to use and the name of the file to use as the prewritten message. We will notify you when it is setup. |
